Some people like things small and if that's your preference, the i-mate™ JAM™ Phone plus Pocket PC and PDA offers a lot of fun and satisfaction. To appreciate the size of this miniscule communicator, you really ought to find a ruler and trace the size on paper: Height: 4 1/4 inches. Width: 2 1/4 inches. Thickness: 3/4 inch.
When we first read about the JAM on Dave'sPDA.com, we went to the i-mate website and found a color image that does not convey how little space is occupied by the JAM wireless phone and Pocket PC. Dave did a much better job on his PDA Place.
Despite its diminutive size, The i-mate JAM has, with two exceptions, all that many other Smart Phones offer: An Intel® 416-MHz Xscale Bulverde™ processor, 64-MB of RAM, 64-MB of ROM, a mini-SDIO expansion slot, Infra-Red port and a 1.3-mp digital camera. The PDA functions are powered by Microsoft® Pocket PC, Phone Edition. At only 2.8-inches, the 16-bit color screen takes up much of the front face, and is amazingly readable.
What's lacking? No WiFi connectivity - via wireless 802.11 or Bluetooth® technology, which under the proper circumstances could save on service charges though cellular phone systems.
The other missing item is a durable, water-resistant carrying case, tailored to fit the i-mate JAM with a hard shield embedded in a padded front flap that covers the entire display. The JAM is so small, one is tempted to put it in a pocket or drop it amongst hard objects in a briefcase or purse. It is possible to buy one of several leather cases that will add the bulk that JAM owners hope to avoid and still will not give the needed protection against weather and wear that waterproof Neoprene* provides.
Plus, the Pouch made especially for the i-mate JAM has a spear-in clasp on the back that will lock it securely on a belt or purse strap. While $29.95 seems large to pay for such a small case, measured against a $650 price, that small sum seems little to invest for the best case to protect such a delicate device with such an easily scratched display. Just for fun, add $2.00 and you can have The Pouch for your i-mate JAM made in one of several bright eye-catching colors.
